Summary

This lesson introduces three connected concepts that help explain how group-based judgments can influence behavior. Understanding the differences between stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination makes it easier to recognize how unfair treatment begins and how it can affect people.

People belong to many social groups, including groups based on gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, social class, religion, sexual orientation, and profession. A person can belong to several groups at the same time. These memberships can contribute to a sense of identity, but they do not tell us everything about an individual.
