Summary

Formal organizations are large, structured groups that coordinate people and activities to pursue particular goals. They are common in modern life, from schools and workplaces to government agencies and healthcare systems. This lesson introduces three types of formal organizations, classified by why people join and what membership provides.

Sociologist Amitai Etzioni identified three broad types of formal organizations. The categories help explain the motivations and experiences associated with membership.
