Summary

This lesson introduces the F distribution and explains how the F-ratio compares variation between groups with variation within groups. These ideas are the foundation of one-way ANOVA.

The F distribution is used in one-way ANOVA to test whether the means of several populations are equal. It was developed by George Snedecor and named in honor of statistician Sir Ronald Fisher.

All flashcards

What is the F distribution?
A family of probability distributions for ratios of variance estimates, shaped by two degrees of freedom.
What does F4,10F_{4,10} denote?
An F distribution with 4 numerator degrees of freedom and 10 denominator degrees of freedom.
What is between-group variation in one-way ANOVA?
Variation among group means relative to the overall mean; also called treatment or explained variation.
What is within-group variation in one-way ANOVA?
Variation of observations around their own group means; also called error or unexplained variation.
Why is the F-ratio generally around 1 under the null hypothesis?
Both mean squares estimate the same population variance, although sampling variation can move their ratio away from 1.

Quiz questions

  1. What is the alternative hypothesis in a one-way ANOVA with several population means?Answer: At least two population means differ.
  2. For a one-way ANOVA with kk groups and nn observations, which degrees of freedom are used for the F statistic?Answer: Numerator k−1k-1 and denominator n−kn-k.
  3. Why is the one-way ANOVA F test right-tailed?Answer: Large F values indicate between-group variation is large relative to within-group variation.
  4. What can a significant overall one-way ANOVA result establish by itself?Answer: There is evidence that not all population means are equal.
  5. Why are there k−1k-1 between-group degrees of freedom in a one-way ANOVA?Answer: They count the independent contrasts available among the kk group means.
