Summary

Chemical nomenclature is the system of rules used to name substances consistently. In this lesson, you will learn to name ionic compounds made from monatomic and polyatomic ions.

An ionic compound consists of positively charged ions called cations and negatively charged ions called anions. Many ionic compounds contain a metal cation and a nonmetal anion; others contain one or more polyatomic ions, which are groups of bonded atoms with an overall charge.

All flashcards

What does a Roman numeral specify in a name such as iron(III) chloride?
The charge of the metal ion; iron(III) indicates an iron ion with a 3+ charge.
What do prefixes indicate in binary molecular compound names?
The number of atoms of each element in the molecular formula.
How are oxyacid names derived from anion endings?
Anion -ate changes to acid -ic; anion -ite changes to acid -ous.
How is an ionic hydrate named?
Name the ionic compound, then add a numerical prefix and the word hydrate.
What is a polyatomic ion?
A charged group of two or more bonded atoms that acts as a unit.
