Summary

Many useful quantities cannot be measured directly. Instead, we measure related properties and calculate the quantity we need. This lesson introduces dimensional analysis, a method for organizing calculations by applying the same operations to numbers and units.

speed=distancetime\text{speed}=\frac{\text{distance}}{\text{time}}

100 m10 s=10 m/s\frac{100\,\text{m}}{10\,\text{s}}=10\,\text{m/s}

All flashcards

Derived quantity
A quantity calculated from other quantities using a mathematical relationship.
Dimensional analysis
A calculation method that applies the same operations to units as to numbers.
Conversion factor
A ratio of equivalent quantities in different units that has a value of one.
Density
Mass divided by volume.
Absolute temperature scale
A scale whose zero point is absolute zero; kelvin is such a scale.
