Summary

A constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) describes a problem using variables, possible values, and rules that restrict which combinations of values are allowed. This shared structure lets one model many different puzzles and practical tasks in a common way.

A CSP asks whether values can be assigned to a set of variables so that all specified constraints are satisfied. For example, in a map-coloring problem, each region is a variable, its domain is a set of colors, and a constraint says that neighboring regions must have different colors.

All flashcards

What is a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP)?
A problem represented by variables, domains of possible values, and constraints that restrict which combinations of values are allowed.
What is a partial evaluation in a CSP?
An assignment that gives values to some, but not necessarily all, variables.
What makes a CSP evaluation a solution?
It is both complete and consistent: every variable is assigned, and no constraint is violated.
What does backjumping do in CSP search?
It returns to an earlier relevant decision instead of undoing only the most recent assignment.
What is a weighted CSP?
A CSP variant that assigns different importance to constraint violations.

Quiz questions

  1. During backtracking search, what happens when a partial assignment violates a constraint?Answer: The search reverses a choice and tries another value.
  2. What is the AC-3 algorithm commonly used to enforce in a CSP?Answer: Arc consistency
  3. If local search fails to find a solution to a CSP, what can be concluded?Answer: The failure does not prove that the CSP is unsatisfiable.
  4. How does the counting version of a CSP differ from its decision version?Answer: It asks how many satisfying assignments exist.
  5. What distinguishes a decentralized CSP from the classic CSP model?Answer: Variables are associated with separate locations, limiting information exchange.
