Summary

Verilog is a hardware description language used to describe and simulate electronic systems, especially digital circuits. This lesson introduces how Verilog designs are organized and how they represent signals and constants.

A hardware description language (HDL) expresses the structure or behavior of hardware. Unlike a conventional software program, which is usually understood as a sequence of operations on a processor, Verilog models physical circuits whose components can operate concurrently. A description may represent signal timing and, at some levels, electrical behavior.

All flashcards

What is a hardware description language?
A language for describing the structure or behavior of hardware systems so they can be modeled, simulated, and, for suitable descriptions, synthesized.
How are Verilog modules connected?
Modules communicate through declared ports, such as inputs, outputs, and bidirectional ports. Instances of modules can be connected to build a hierarchy.
What is the difference between wire and reg?
`wire` is a net representing a connection driven by sources. `reg` is a procedural variable assigned within a process; the name does not guarantee a physical register.
What do X and Z mean?
`X` represents an unknown or indeterminate logic value. `Z` represents high impedance, where a driver is effectively disconnected.
How is a sized Verilog constant written?
Use `size'basevalue`, such as `4'b1010`: the size gives the bit width and the base specifies binary, octal, decimal, or hexadecimal.

Quiz questions

  1. What kind of system is Verilog primarily used to describe?Answer: Electronic hardware systems, especially digital circuits.
  2. What is the main role of a module in a Verilog design?Answer: It encapsulates part of a design and communicates through declared ports.
  3. Why are non-blocking assignments commonly used for clocked sequential logic?Answer: They schedule state updates so multiple elements can update together after evaluating inputs.
  4. What does synthesis do with a synthesizable RTL description?Answer: Transforms it into a netlist of hardware primitives for a target technology.
  5. How should `8'h2A` be interpreted?Answer: A hexadecimal constant with a width of 8 bits and a value of 2A in hexadecimal.
