Summary

An RLC circuit combines resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Its ability to exchange energy and resonate makes it important in signal selection, filtering, and oscillation.

A resistor RR dissipates electrical energy, an inductor LL stores energy in a magnetic field when current flows, and a capacitor CC stores energy in an electric field when charged. The components may be connected in series, in parallel, or in more complex arrangements. Real inductors also have winding resistance, even when no separate resistor is included.

What is an RLC circuit?
An electrical circuit containing a resistor RR, an inductor LL, and a capacitor CC. These elements can be connected in series, in parallel, or in other topologies.
How do the inductor and capacitor enable oscillation?
The capacitor stores energy in an electric field and the inductor stores energy in a magnetic field. Energy transfers between these forms, producing oscillatory behavior.
What is the ideal LC angular resonant frequency?
It is omega0=1/sqrtLComega_0=1/sqrt{LC} radians per second. The corresponding frequency in hertz is f0=omega0/(2pi)f_0=omega_0/(2pi).
How does resistance affect ringing?
Resistance dissipates energy, so it damps the response and reduces the amplitude of natural oscillations over time.
What distinguishes underdamped, critical, and overdamped responses?
Underdamped circuits ring (zeta<1zeta<1); critically damped circuits return to equilibrium without ringing (zeta=1zeta=1); overdamped circuits return without ringing (zeta>1zeta>1).

Quiz questions

  1. Which three components give an RLC circuit its name?Answer: A resistor, an inductor, and a capacitor.
  2. What energy exchange produces oscillations in an ideal LC combination?Answer: Energy moves between the capacitor’s electric field and the inductor’s magnetic field.
  3. At resonance in a series RLC circuit, what happens to the inductor and capacitor reactances?Answer: They cancel, so the circuit impedance reaches a minimum.
  4. At resonance in an ideal parallel RLC circuit, what happens to its impedance?Answer: It reaches a maximum as the inductor and capacitor susceptances cancel.
  5. How does natural ringing differ from driven resonance in an RLC circuit?Answer: Natural ringing is a transient after a disturbance; driven resonance is the response as source frequency varies.
