Summary

This lesson explores the varied societies of the Arabian Peninsula before Islam. Its geography and tribal divisions shaped local life, while trade connected Arabia to powerful neighboring regions.

Much of the Arabian Peninsula was dry, with limited rainfall, water, and cultivatable land. The Rubʽ al-Khali, or Empty Quarter, is an especially vast desert. Yet Arabia was not one uniform or isolated place. Its communities included nomadic and seminomadic groups, settled populations, and kingdoms with fertile agricultural lands.
