Summary
The Bhagavad Gita is a Hindu scripture embedded in the epic Mahabharata. This lesson introduces its name, narrative setting, central speakers, and broad religious importance.
Bhagavad Gita is commonly translated as “Song of God,” “Divine Song,” or “Words of the Lord.” The word Gita means “song.” The Sanskrit title is also written Shrimad Bhagavad Gita; the respectful prefix Shrimad conveys honor. The text is not the same work as the Bhagavata Purana, a separate Purana that includes accounts of Krishna and Vishnu’s avatars.
