Summary

This lesson explains how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) defeated the Nationalists and founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It also introduces the early challenges facing the new government and China’s alignment with the Soviet Union.

Since the 1920s, China’s two main political forces had been the Guomindang (GMD), or Nationalist Party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), led by Mao Zedong. They sometimes cooperated, including in resistance to Japan, but they also fought one another.
