Summary

This lesson examines how the Abbasid Caliphate created a wealthy, cosmopolitan society and why its political authority later weakened. Understanding both sides of this history helps explain the divisions that shaped the rise of the Fatimids and Seljuks.

After overthrowing the Umayyads, the Abbasids moved the center of their empire east and established their capital at Baghdad. The caliphate preserved administrative practices inherited from Persian and Byzantine governments, helping maintain revenue, cities, and trade. Arabic remained the language of administration and religion, while Persian language and literary traditions also influenced culture.
