Summary

Proteins are versatile biological molecules built from amino acids. Their composition and size allow them to perform many essential roles in organisms.

The side chain gives each amino acid its distinctive chemical characteristics. Side chains differ in properties such as size, charge, and polarity. These differences affect how amino acids interact with one another and help determine the structure and behavior of the proteins they form.

All flashcards

Amino acid residue
An amino acid incorporated into a polypeptide chain.
Primary structure
The ordered sequence of amino acid residues in a polypeptide chain.
Tertiary structure
The overall three-dimensional shape of a single polypeptide chain.
Quaternary structure
The arrangement and interactions of multiple polypeptide subunits.
Denaturation
Loss of a protein's higher-level structure while its primary sequence remains intact.

Quiz questions

  1. Which four groups are attached to the α carbon of a typical amino acid?Answer: A hydrogen atom, a carboxyl group, an amino group, and a variable side chain.
  2. When the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another, what forms?Answer: A peptide bond forms, and a water molecule is released.
  3. What is a chain containing three amino acids called?Answer: A tripeptide.
  4. Which level of protein structure describes the overall three-dimensional shape of one polypeptide chain?Answer: Tertiary structure.
  5. Which subunits make up hemoglobin's quaternary structure?Answer: Two α polypeptides and two β polypeptides.
