Summary

The chain rule tells us how to differentiate a function whose input is itself a function. It is essential whenever one quantity changes through an intermediate quantity.

A composite function is formed by applying one function to the output of another. If h(x)=z(y(x))h(x)=z(y(x)), then yy is the inner function and zz is the outer function. The chain rule states

All flashcards

Chain rule for a composition
For h(x)=f(g(x))h(x)=f(g(x)), h′(x)=f′(g(x))g′(x)h'(x)=f'(g(x))g'(x); evaluate the outer derivative at the inner output.
Differentiating multiple nested layers
Differentiate each successive link in the dependency chain, evaluate at its immediate input, and multiply the factors.
Multivariable chain rule for one input
If y=f(u1,…,um)y=f(u_1,\ldots,u_m) and each uℓu_\ell depends on xx, then dydx=∑ℓ=1m∂y∂uℓduℓdx\frac{dy}{dx}=\sum_{\ell=1}^{m}\frac{\partial y}{\partial u_\ell}\frac{du_\ell}{dx}.
Second derivative of a composition
For y=f(g(x))y=f(g(x)), y′′=f′′(g(x))(g′(x))2+f′(g(x))g′′(x)y''=f''(g(x))(g'(x))^2+f'(g(x))g''(x).
Jacobian chain rule
For a composition f∘gf\circ g, Jf∘g(a)=Jf(g(a))Jg(a)J_{f\circ g}(a)=J_f(g(a))J_g(a).

Quiz questions

  1. If h(x)=f(g(x))h(x)=f(g(x)), which expression gives h′(x)h'(x)?Answer: f′(g(x))g′(x)f'(g(x))g'(x)
  2. If y=f(u1,…,um)y=f(u_1,\ldots,u_m) and every uℓu_\ell depends on xx, how is dy/dxdy/dx calculated?Answer: ∑ℓ=1m∂y∂uℓduℓdx\sum_{\ell=1}^{m}\frac{\partial y}{\partial u_\ell}\frac{du_\ell}{dx}
  3. For differentiable functions ff and gg, with g(x)≠0g(x)\ne 0, which formula gives the derivative of f(x)/g(x)f(x)/g(x)?Answer: f′(x)g(x)−f(x)g′(x)g(x)2\frac{f'(x)g(x)-f(x)g'(x)}{g(x)^2}
  4. If ff is the differentiable inverse of gg, which formula gives f′(y)f'(y) when g′(f(y))≠0g'(f(y))\ne 0?Answer: 1g′(f(y))\frac{1}{g'(f(y))}
  5. If ff maps intermediate variables to outputs and gg maps inputs to intermediate variables, what is the Jacobian of f∘gf\circ g at aa?Answer: Jf(g(a))Jg(a)J_f(g(a))J_g(a)
