Summary

This lesson introduces repeating motion and two ways to describe its timing: period and frequency. These quantities help us compare oscillations, from a swinging child to the high-frequency waves used in medical imaging.

Periodic motion is motion that repeats itself at regular time intervals. A guitar string vibrating after it is plucked and a child swinging back and forth are examples. One complete repetition is called a cycle or oscillation. For a string, one cycle consists of moving from its initial position to one extreme, then to the opposite extreme, and back to the initial position.

All flashcards

What does the amplitude of an oscillator measure?
Its maximum displacement from the equilibrium position.
What is the phase shift in an SHM position equation?
A value that represents the oscillator’s initial position and motion in its cycle.
How is angular frequency related to the period of an oscillator?
By ω=2π/T\omega=2\pi/T; it describes how rapidly the oscillation’s phase changes.
What is the maximum speed of an ideal SHM oscillator?
vmax⁡=Aωv_{\max}=A\omega, where AA is amplitude and ω\omega is angular frequency.
How does gravity affect a vertical spring oscillator’s ideal timing?
It shifts the equilibrium position but does not change the period for a given mass and spring constant.

Quiz questions

  1. Which condition defines simple harmonic motion in one dimension?Answer: Acceleration is proportional to displacement and directed oppositely.
  2. For an ideal spring displaced by xx from equilibrium, which equation gives its restoring force?Answer: Fs=−kxF_s=-kx
  3. Where does an ideal SHM oscillator have its greatest speed?Answer: As it passes through equilibrium.
  4. What is the period of an ideal mass-spring oscillator with mass mm and spring constant kk?Answer: T=2πm/kT=2\pi\sqrt{m/k}
  5. For a hanging mass at rest, what relation connects its weight and the spring’s static extension Δy\Delta y?Answer: kΔy=mgk\Delta y=mg
