Summary

Rotational motion and translational motion use parallel ways of describing position, velocity, and acceleration. This lesson connects those variables and explains how a point on a rotating object moves along a circular path.

The basic linear kinematic quantities have rotational counterparts. Position xx corresponds to angular position θ\theta, velocity vv to angular velocity ω\omega, and acceleration aa to angular acceleration α\alpha.

All flashcards

What are the angular counterparts of linear position, velocity, and acceleration?
Angular position θ\theta corresponds to position xx, angular velocity ω\omega corresponds to velocity vv, and angular acceleration α\alpha corresponds to acceleration aa.
How are tangential speed and angular velocity related?
For a point at radius rr from the axis, vt=rωv_t = r\omega. At the same angular velocity, a point farther from the axis has greater tangential speed.
What is centripetal acceleration, and which way does it point?
Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration associated with changing the direction of tangential velocity. It points inward toward the center of the circular path and has magnitude ac=vt2/ra_c = v_t^2/r.
What does tangential acceleration describe?
Tangential acceleration describes a change in the magnitude of tangential velocity. Its magnitude is at=rαa_t = r\alpha.
How do the centripetal and tangential components determine total acceleration?
They add as perpendicular vectors, a⃗=a⃗c+a⃗t\vec{a} = \vec{a}_c + \vec{a}_t. The magnitude is ∣a⃗∣=ac2+at2|\vec{a}| = \sqrt{a_c^2 + a_t^2}.

Quiz questions

  1. Which angular variable corresponds to linear position xx?Answer: Angular position θ\theta.
  2. What is the relationship between tangential speed and angular velocity for a point at radius rr?Answer: vt=rωv_t = r\omega.
  3. What causes centripetal acceleration in circular motion?Answer: The change in the direction of the tangential velocity.
  4. A point moves in uniform circular motion at a constant angular velocity. Which statement about its acceleration is correct?Answer: It has inward centripetal acceleration, even though its tangential acceleration is zero.
  5. A point has perpendicular acceleration components of magnitudes aca_c and ata_t. How is the magnitude of its total acceleration found?Answer: ∣a⃗∣=ac2+at2|\vec{a}| = \sqrt{a_c^2 + a_t^2}.
