Summary
Modular arithmetic describes integer arithmetic in which values wrap around after reaching a fixed modulus. This lesson introduces remainders, congruence notation, and the basic meaning of “the same remainder.”
A 12-hour clock is a familiar model of arithmetic modulo 12. If the hour hand points to 7 and 8 hours pass, ordinary addition gives . But a clock reading of 15 is read as 3, so . After 12 hours, the hand returns to its starting point, which is why .
