Summary

The eye is a remarkable optical instrument: it gathers light, focuses an image, and sends information to the brain. This lesson introduces the eye’s main optical structures and explains how a clear image is formed on the retina.

Light reflected from an object enters the eye through the cornea, passes through the aqueous humor and the lens, and travels through the vitreous humor toward the retina. The cornea and lens together act approximately like a single converging thin lens, even though light changes direction at several boundaries inside the eye.

All flashcards

Retina
The light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye where a focused image must form.
Fovea
A retinal region with many light receptors and the greatest visual acuity.
Optic nerve
Carries visual signals from the eye to the brain.
Accommodation
Adjustment of the eye lens's shape to keep images focused on the retina.
Cornea
The eye structure that provides most of its focusing power.

Quiz questions

  1. Which structures act approximately as a single converging lens in the eye?Answer: The cornea and the eye lens.
  2. How does the eye accommodate to focus on objects at different distances?Answer: Ciliary muscles change the curvature of the flexible lens.
  3. Which lens type commonly corrects myopia?Answer: A diverging lens that reduces the system's convergence.
  4. Which lens type commonly helps correct hyperopia?Answer: A converging lens that adds optical power.
  5. What happens to optical power when a lens's focal length becomes shorter?Answer: Its optical power increases.
