This lesson compares a sample of randomly generated values with the theoretical uniform distribution on the interval from 0 to 1. By examining summary statistics, histograms, and a box plot, you will see how random samples can differ from a theoretical model—and how larger samples tend to resemble it more closely.
Generate 50 random values between 0 and 1, inclusive, using a random number generator. Record each value and round consistently to four decimal places. The generated values form an empirical sample: actual observations from a random process, rather than values describing every possible outcome.

What is an empirical sample?
It is the set of actual observations collected from a process. Its statistics, such as its mean and quartiles, can vary from one random sample to another.
What are the mean and standard deviation of U(0,1)?
The theoretical mean is μ=0.5. The theoretical standard deviation is σ=1/12≈0.2887.
What are the quartiles and IQR of U(0,1)?
The first quartile is 0.25, the median is 0.5, and the third quartile is 0.75. Thus, IQR=Q3−Q1=0.5.
How does the number of histogram bins affect a histogram?
More bins show narrower intervals and finer detail but can make random fluctuations more visible. Fewer bins combine observations into wider intervals and can make the graph look smoother while hiding detail.
How does the 1.5-IQR rule identify potential outliers?
Calculate the lower fence Q1−1.5(IQR) and upper fence Q3+1.5(IQR). Observations below the lower fence or above the upper fence are potential outliers.
Quiz questions
What does the notation X∼U(0,1) describe?Answer: A continuous uniform random variable on the interval from 0 to 1.
What is the theoretical median of a continuous uniform distribution on [0,1]?Answer: 0.5
Why might a histogram of 50 values from U(0,1) fail to look perfectly level?Answer: Random sampling variation can cause different bins to contain different numbers of observations.
For U(0,1), the theoretical quartiles are Q1=0.25 and Q3=0.75. What is the theoretical IQR?Answer: 0.5
If the number of generated values increases from 50 to 500, what should generally happen to the empirical histogram?Answer: It tends toward the roughly level pattern, while some random fluctuations remain.
