Summary
The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and forms an important protective barrier. This lesson explores its structure, the progression of its cells from deep to superficial, and the differences between thin and thick skin.
The epidermis is made of keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium. It is avascular, meaning it contains no blood vessels; nutrients reach its cells from tissues beneath it. Most areas have four epidermal layers and are called thin skin. The palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and digits have thick skin, which has five layers.
