Summary

The nervous system is more than the brain and spinal cord: it is a complex system of interconnected structures and cells. This lesson introduces its two major anatomical divisions and the basic cells that make nervous communication possible.

The nervous system is divided anatomically into the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

All flashcards

What is the central nervous system?
The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The PNS includes nervous system structures beyond the brain and spinal cord, such as nerves and ganglia.
What is a glial cell?
A glial cell is one of several kinds of cells that support neurons and their activities.
What does a neuron's axon do?
The axon is a process that connects a neuron with its target and carries signals toward that target.
What is the typical role of dendrites?
Dendrites branch from the soma and receive much of the input arriving from other neurons.

Quiz questions

  1. What is a bundle of axons in the central nervous system called?Answer: A tract.
  2. Which description best characterizes gray matter?Answer: Regions containing many neuron cell bodies and dendrites.
  3. What does integration do in nervous system function?Answer: Processes sensory information in relation to other information and context.
  4. Which tissues and organs receive motor output from the autonomic nervous system?Answer: Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands.
  5. What does functional MRI (fMRI) map?Answer: Changes associated with brain activity over time.
