Summary

Health literacy affects how people find, understand, and use health information and services. Nurses assess it so that health education fits the needs of individuals and communities and supports informed decisions.

Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals can find, understand, and use information and services to make health-related decisions and take action for themselves and others. It includes more than reading a pamphlet: people use health information when taking medication, selecting a provider, deciding where to live, or considering health-related policies.
