Summary

Population health focuses on improving health across groups of people, not only treating illness after it occurs. This lesson explains why prevention and health promotion matter and how their benefits can reach individuals, communities, and society.

Health care can respond to illness after it develops, or it can help prevent illness and support well-being before problems arise. Consider the analogy of a faucet overflowing onto a floor. Treating each person’s illness is like repeatedly mopping the water; prevention is like turning off the faucet. Both forms of care can be necessary, but preventing the conditions that produce illness can reduce harm before it spreads.
