Summary

Public/community health nurses work to improve the health of communities and populations through health promotion, disease prevention, risk reduction, education, and responses to outbreaks and other health threats. This lesson explains how scope of practice and professional standards guide that work.

Scope of practice describes the professional activities associated with a particular nursing role. It helps nurses understand what they are qualified and competent to do, and when they should seek consultation, training, or referral. Nurses must practice within the limits of their education, expertise, competence, role, and applicable requirements.
