Summary

Education is a major social determinant of health (SDOH). It can influence employment, income, access to health care, health behaviors, and long-term health outcomes. This lesson examines how educational attainment is associated with health and how structural inequities shape access to education.

Educational attainment describes the level of education a person has completed. Higher educational attainment includes education completed after high school, such as an associate or bachelor’s degree. People with more education are more likely, on average, to live longer and experience better health.
