Summary

Aaron Temkin Beck (1921–2021) was an American psychiatrist whose clinical research helped shape cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This lesson traces how his education and early professional experiences brought him to psychiatry and prepared him to question established explanations of depression.

Beck was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1921, the youngest of four children in a Jewish immigrant family. He attended local schools and graduated as valedictorian of Hope Street High School in 1938. At Brown University, he graduated magna cum laude in 1942 and took part in academic and student life, including work as an associate editor of The Brown Daily Herald.
