Summary

The sociocultural perspective understands a person’s symptoms and behavior in the context of their culture, identity, family, and social environment. This lesson explains how cultural context can shape therapy and why clinicians need to adapt their approach to each client.

A sociocultural approach does not view a symptom in isolation. It considers how cultural traditions, religion, family expectations, social position, and other aspects of a person’s background may shape what they experience and how they understand it.
