Summary

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is a widely used standardized measure of adult personality and psychopathology. This lesson introduces its purpose, origins, and major revisions.

The MMPI consists of first-person statements about mental-health symptoms, beliefs, sensations, and attitudes. A test-taker indicates whether each statement is true or false as it applies to them. The resulting profile can contribute to assessment, but it is not by itself a diagnosis.

What is the MMPI?
A standardized self-report psychological inventory used to assess aspects of adult personality and psychopathology. It can inform assessment but does not independently provide a diagnosis.
Who created the original MMPI, and when was it published?
Starke R. Hathaway and J. C. McKinley developed it. The University of Minnesota Press first published it in 1943.
What is empirical criterion keying?
A test-development method in which items are selected because response patterns distinguish a criterion group, such as patients with a particular diagnosis, from a comparison group.
What were the goals of the MMPI-2-RF?
To provide a shorter, reorganized measure based on the Restructured Clinical scales, designed to produce a more streamlined and interpretable profile.
What changed with the MMPI-3?
Released in 2020, it updated norms and scales, expanded the item pool, and added assessment areas such as disordered eating, compulsivity, impulsivity, and self-importance.
