Images communicate ideas, but interpreting them is not always as simple as recognizing what they depict. This lesson introduces interpretation and explains how to examine an image critically rather than relying only on an immediate personal reaction.
Interpretation is the sense a person makes of a communication, whether it is written, spoken, or visual. An interpretation is influenced by what is shown, the circumstances in which the communication was created and encountered, and the viewer’s personal experiences. Because viewers bring different experiences and knowledge, one image can support more than one interpretation.
