Summary

Sociology helps us understand how society shapes people’s experiences and how people, in turn, can help shape society. This lesson explores how sociological research can inform social change and how a sociological perspective encourages us to question familiar assumptions.

Sociology is the disciplined study of society. Sociologists examine how social arrangements affect people and how evidence can help explain social problems. Their research can inform decisions by courts, policymakers, schools, and other institutions.
