Summary

Textiles are fibre-based materials that range from individual fibres and yarns to finished fabrics and products. Understanding the terms used to describe them helps explain how textile products are made and why their components are selected for particular uses.

The word textile comes from the Latin textilis, meaning “woven,” and is related to texere, “to weave.” Although the word originally referred mainly to woven materials, it now covers fibres, yarns, fabrics, and other related materials.

All flashcards

What is a textile?
A fibre-based material or product, including fibres, yarns, threads, filaments, fabrics, and related items.
How do fabric and cloth differ in common specialist usage?
Fabric is a broad term for thin, flexible materials made by several methods. Cloth often refers to flexible material made from yarns or to a processed or cut piece.
What is the usual fibre-to-fabric sequence?
Fibres are commonly spun or twisted into yarns, which are then formed into fabrics. Felting and bonding can create fabric directly from fibres.
What distinguishes technical textiles from consumer textiles?
Technical textiles are selected chiefly for functional performance; consumer textiles are commonly designed for personal or domestic use, often with comfort and appearance in mind.
What does serviceability include?
Serviceability is a product's ability to meet user needs, including considerations such as durability, comfort, safety, care, environmental impact, and cost.
