Summary

Communication in organizations is shaped not only by the words people use, but also by their relationships, positions, goals, and ability to interact. Understanding these influences helps managers communicate clearly, build trust, and choose an appropriate approach for different situations.

Power is the ability to influence decisions, actions, or access to resources. In organizations, a manager’s formal authority gives them potential power, but how they use that authority affects whether employees feel comfortable sharing information. A manager who listens and responds fairly can encourage open communication; one who relies on intimidation may discourage questions and honest feedback.
