Summary

Leadership can guide people either by organizing exchanges around tasks or by inspiring them to pursue significant change. This lesson compares transactional and transformational leadership and introduces the behaviors associated with transformational leaders.

A transactional leader focuses on task accomplishment, clear expectations, and exchanges between leader and follower. The leader may initiate structure, set standards, and offer incentives in return for desired behaviors. This approach can be useful when tasks and goals are clear and reliable performance is important.
