Summary

This lesson introduces how to describe where an object is along a circular path. Angular position provides a rotational counterpart to position in straight-line motion.

A particle moving around a circle has a position relative to the circle’s center. The angle swept out by its position vector, measured from a chosen reference direction, is its angular position, denoted by θ\theta. A fixed coordinate system provides the frame of reference for measuring this angle.

All flashcards

Angular displacement
The change in angular position, calculated as final angular position minus initial angular position.
Average angular velocity
Angular displacement divided by the elapsed time: ωˉ=Δθ/Δt\bar{\omega}=\Delta\theta/\Delta t.
Angular velocity vector
A vector directed along the rotation axis, with direction given by the right-hand rule.
Tangential velocity
The velocity of a point on a rotating body, given by v⃗=ω⃗×r⃗\vec{v}=\vec{\omega}\times\vec{r}.
Tangential acceleration
The acceleration component that changes tangential speed; for fixed-axis rotation, a⃗t=α⃗×r⃗\vec{a}_t=\vec{\alpha}\times\vec{r}.
