Summary

This lesson introduces the structure and language of linear differential equations. Recognizing the order, the source term, and the associated homogeneous equation helps you classify an equation before choosing a solution method.

An ordinary linear differential equation of order nn has the form

a0(x)y+a1(x)y′+⋯+an(x)y(n)=b(x).a_0(x)y+a_1(x)y'+\cdots+a_n(x)y^{(n)}=b(x).

The unknown function yy and its derivatives appear only to the first power, are not multiplied by one another, and are not placed inside nonlinear functions such as sin⁡(y)\sin(y). The coefficient functions ai(x)a_i(x) and the forcing function b(x)b(x) may depend on xx in arbitrary ways; they do not have to be linear functions of xx.

What is a linear differential equation?
An equation in which the unknown function and its derivatives appear linearly: they are not multiplied together or put inside nonlinear functions. Its coefficients may still depend nonlinearly on the independent variable.
How is the order of an equation defined?
It is the highest derivative appearing in the equation with a coefficient that is not identically zero.
What does homogeneous mean for Ly=b(x)Ly=b(x)?
The equation is homogeneous when the term independent of the unknown function and its derivatives is zero, so b(x)=0b(x)=0.
What is the general form of a non-homogeneous solution?
It is y=yp+yhy=y_p+y_h, where ypy_p is one particular solution and yhy_h is any solution of the associated homogeneous equation.
What does the kernel of LL represent?
The kernel is the set of functions mapped to zero by LL. For a differential operator, these are precisely the solutions of the homogeneous equation Ly=0Ly=0.
