Summary

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Because these hormones affect many tissues, reduced levels can influence energy, temperature regulation, digestion, heart function, mood, growth, and development.

The thyroid is a gland at the front of the neck. Its hormones help regulate the body's use of energy and support normal function in many organs. Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease in which the gland's hormone output is insufficient. The name combines hypo- (reduced) with terms referring to the thyroid's shield-like shape.

All flashcards

What is hypothyroidism?
Insufficient thyroid hormone production that can affect the function of many body systems.
How do primary and central hypothyroidism differ?
Primary hypothyroidism originates in the thyroid gland; central hypothyroidism results from inadequate pituitary or hypothalamic stimulation.
What is required to produce thyroid hormone?
The thyroid uses iodine and the amino acid tyrosine to produce hormone, mainly thyroxine (T4).
What laboratory pattern suggests central hypothyroidism?
Low free T4 with a normal or low TSH suggests inadequate pituitary or hypothalamic signaling.
How is primary hypothyroidism usually treated?
Levothyroxine, a synthetic form of T4, is standard treatment; dosing and monitoring are individualized.

Quiz questions

  1. Which laboratory pattern characterizes overt primary hypothyroidism?Answer: High TSH with low T4.
  2. Which laboratory pattern defines subclinical hypothyroidism?Answer: Elevated TSH with normal free T4.
  3. What does low free T4 with normal or low TSH suggest?Answer: Central hypothyroidism from inadequate pituitary or hypothalamic signaling.
  4. Which statement about measuring T3 for suspected hypothyroidism is correct?Answer: T3 measurement is not recommended as a routine assessment.
  5. Which substance can reduce levothyroxine absorption when taken with the medication?Answer: Calcium.
