Summary

The American Heart Association defines cardiovascular disease as disease of the heart and blood vessels. Some cardiovascular conditions are congenital, meaning a person is born with them. Many others develop over a person’s lifetime and are often linked to atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis involves the buildup of cholesterol-containing plaque in artery walls. As plaque accumulates, the arteries can become narrowed and less able to carry blood. This is important because blood supplies the heart muscle with oxygen. When the heart receives less blood and oxygen, the condition is known as coronary heart disease.
