Summary

The urinary and reproductive systems work in distinct but closely related ways, so they are often studied together as the urogenital system. Understanding their structures and normal microbial residents helps explain how the body prevents infection.

The urinary system filters blood, removes wastes, and helps maintain water and electrolyte balance. Kidneys contain millions of filtration units called nephrons. Within each nephron, a capillary network called the glomerulus filters fluid and molecules from blood to form filtrate, which becomes urine.
