Summary

Educational aims, objectives, and learning outcomes are related concepts, but they serve different purposes in organized education. Understanding the distinctions helps educators design courses and helps learners see what they are expected to achieve.

In everyday language, aim, objective, and goal are often used interchangeably. In organized education, however, aims and objectives are commonly distinguished by their focus: aims concern purpose, while objectives concern achievement.

All flashcards

How do educational aims differ from course objectives?
Aims express broader educational purposes, often looking beyond a course toward a learner’s future. Objectives describe relatively shorter-term achievements expected within a course.
What is a learning outcome?
A statement of what students should be able to do by the end of a teaching session or another defined period of learning.
What does constructive alignment connect?
It connects intended learning outcomes with supporting teaching and learning activities and assessments that provide evidence of achievement.
How can SMART criteria help with learning outcomes?
They encourage outcomes to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, making expectations clearer and more assessable.
What is an unintended learning outcome, and what is one challenge in assessing learning?
An unintended learning outcome is an observed result that was neither planned nor sought; it may still be beneficial. Capabilities such as critical thinking can be difficult to formalize and assess reliably.
