Summary

This lesson introduces the needs-based perspective shared by content theories and explains Henry Murray’s Manifest Needs Theory.

A need is a human condition that becomes energized when someone feels deficient in some respect. Hunger, for example, energizes the need for food. Content theories of motivation focus on the needs that influence behavior and performance.
