Talent development helps organizations understand their workforce and prepare people to contribute now and in the future. This lesson introduces talent development, succession planning, and the 9-box performance–potential grid.
Talent development is the collection of processes and programs an organization uses to assess and develop talent. It connects employee capabilities with the organization’s current and future needs. Talent is a competitive advantage, so development requires commitment from both HR and business leaders.
All flashcards
What is talent development?
The organization-wide processes and programs used to assess talent and help employees develop their capabilities.
What is succession planning?
A process for reviewing important roles and determining how ready potential internal or external candidates are to fill them.
What does the 9-box grid show?
It places employees according to two ratings—current-role performance and potential to succeed at the next level—with low, medium, and high ratings for each.
How is potential different from performance?
Performance concerns evidence of results in the current role; potential concerns the ability and readiness to succeed at a higher level.
Why is a low potential rating not a judgment of employee value?
It indicates that advancement may not be appropriate or desired at the time. An employee can be a highly valuable specialist without seeking a higher-level role.
