Summary

Performance appraisal uses structured methods to evaluate an employee’s work and provide information for feedback and personnel decisions. This lesson introduces the purposes of appraisal and examines the widely used graphic rating scale.

Organizations use performance appraisals to review results, identify strengths and development needs, guide employee counseling, and inform decisions such as compensation, promotion, or training. The appropriate method depends partly on the purpose: a method useful for feedback may not be equally effective for comparing employees or identifying future leaders.
