Evidence-based practice (EBP) and evidence-based decision-making (EBDM) depend on more than collecting research. Nurses must determine whether the information is trustworthy, relevant, and useful for the question and population at hand. This lesson introduces levels of evidence and the purpose of appraising sources.
After a literature search, evidence should be organized and categorized so decision-makers can compare sources and identify the most useful information. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (JHNEBP) Model offers a structured, three-step problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making. Its purpose is to help practitioners make informed decisions using evidence in a systematic way.
All flashcards
What is evidence appraisal?
It is the systematic assessment of acquired information, including its audience, purpose, relevance, applicability, validity, and reliability.
What does the evidence pyramid communicate?
It ranks evidence, with the highest and most synthesized information at the top drawing on research from lower levels.
What is validity in research appraisal?
Validity is the degree to which information in a source is factual and accurate; it is also associated with the source's credibility.
What is reliability in research appraisal?
Reliability is the extent to which results can be reproduced when research is conducted again under the same conditions.
Why are relevance and applicability separate considerations?
Relevance concerns how closely a source addresses the research question. Applicability concerns how well its results pertain to the population or setting where they may be used.
Quiz questions
A source ranks high in an evidence pyramid. What can that ranking establish on its own?Answer: It indicates a high level of synthesis, but not whether the evidence fits a particular population.
What is the purpose of the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model?Answer: To provide a structured approach to evidence-based clinical decision-making.
What can a community survey about exercise programs help nurses understand?Answer: Local program locations, costs, and attendance.
Some racial and ethnic groups are underrepresented in a study. What does this most directly indicate?Answer: The findings may apply less confidently to populations not well represented.
In a community exercise program, which measures distinguish participation from an outcome?Answer: Attendance and resource use measure participation; reported anxiety is an outcome.
