Summary

Human resource management (HRM) has developed from a primarily administrative and compliance-focused function into a strategic contributor to organizational success. This lesson explains the four waves of HR’s evolution and how HR can create value by connecting people practices to both business goals and external outcomes.

The waves framework describes how HR’s work and sources of credibility have expanded. Each wave builds on earlier responsibilities; it does not mean that the work of previous waves disappears.
